I installed it today on a Forerunner 245. It works with the optical sensor and it works with my Garmin chest strap.

Thanks for making this! It's a bit confusing to use however, especially as a new watch user. Are there any instructions anywhere for a quick overview of how to log and view the data?

Hi Andrew, Rather than leaving a bad review you can always contact me. I've been trying to resolve a firmware update issue which has broken something in the code on a few watches. If you have an IQ error please look in the LOGS folder on your device for the CIQ_LOG.YAML file which is written or updated to /GARMIN/APPS/LOGS and send it to me. The Garmin tools are useless and show no errors from user devices

Hi Dragos, rather than writing a bad review you can also ping me an email to try resolving. Given it was a Garmin firmware update that caused the issue not likely to be the app at fault. I've had a few reports of this happening and suspect Garmin changed something in the storage module. People find rebooting the watch and running app again resolves or clearing the app settings.

Great app collecting so much data. I'm using this on a venu sq. Is it possible to see the poincare analysis on garmin connect (either on my phone or computer)? My venu sq is quite new and I'm still learning how to use it; but any graph only available on my watch needs better eyesight than I have!

Hi Laura, Glad you like the app. The poincare display requires all the samples that have been acquired and processed. It might be possible to add this data in the FIT file but Connect wouldn't be able to display it. You would need to convert the FIT to CSV then chart yourself.

Hi is there anywhere that explains what the data means? I love the app but could do with an explanation of all the different graphs and numbers. Please help?

Hi Barry, thanks for the review. the website link in the app description takes you to a page that describes the stats. At the bottom of the page are some links to papers around the subject. Other than that there is a lot of information on the internet. https://mcternan.wordpress.com/hrv-analysis-app/

Excellent HRV app and so convenient for Garmin Epix 2. I notice that although initially I got all HRV values directly from the wrist sensor, I get them now only when wearing chest strap. Am I doing something wrong?

Hi, Thanks for the review. You are doing nothing wrong. If you wear a strap it will use this in preference to the optical sensor (just the way Garmin has setup the sensor hub on the device). I used to have a separate ANT interface so you could choose but as the app grew it wouldn't fit in smaller devices!

Did you take the measurements at exactly the same time using the same HR source? Did you align scaling factors for the way each app outputs HRV? What processing is done on the interval data to reduce noise, artefacts and missed/extra beats? These will explain any differences.

Perhaps if you could be more specific I could help eg do you mean on the watch or in connect or on the web. It's a standard activity and if you've ever looked at one of those you will known how to find the output from a test. Note you need to enable FIT write as per the website instructions for data to appear in connect.

Awesome app!! Love all the features but I’m confused and about the long and short heartbeats. I know what an ectopic beat is but you can provide info about a long or short beat?

thanks. The website for the app describes the long and short... Long - The number of pulses exceeding long threshold (beat longer than normal ie slower BPM) Short - The number of pulses exceeding short threshold (beat shorter than normal ie faster BPM) There are default thresholds you can change. Basically it looks at the short term average then compensates by the threshold to determine if, in a resting state, the current value is lower/higher than predicted. Regards, David

Hi, Glad you like the app. You have three options: 1. ConnectIQ. Goto "My device" then "my device apps" then HRV Analysis settings. Turn on Fit Write 2.Connect. Goto Garmin devices then pick your watch then apps and activities then app which goes to 1. 3. On device open app, Press Menu button then FIT Output then click or touch Write when blue bar is on this item. Hope that helps.

Summary: Wow! Stellar application! All details I could ask for plus graphs, trends, initial classifications derived from parent population (so you get an idea to classify the results until you have established your baseline). Very extensive customizability (via Connect IQ and settings directly on the watch). Those settings include technical (such as the timer time that you can reduce here, defaulting to 5 minutes; current research has shown that results with less samples / shorter sampling time do correlate with the initially proposed 5 minutes. The new recommendation is one minute, which however may differ when using PRV, the optical sensor (technical constraint; that would be the case with all applications using this data); you can use your chest strap too however to measure HRV). I was very happy to donate for a beer, thank you!

Hi, Thanks for the review. You can use FitToCSV.bat to convert the FIT file produced to a CSV file. You then need to find the right fields/columns to get the data you want. You can message me if you want further help. Note on older devices you can create a debug file in the LOGs folder - instructions on my webpage.

I downloaded this because I wanted more data than the Garmin HRV Stress app. This definitely hits the mark on that, and it works very well on my Fenix 5. I need to learn more about it, but the developer has clearly done the homework and made a really thorough app. Grateful to have it and looking forward to using it more.
