The watch app Map Chart can be used without a connection to your phone.
But you need the phone app Map Chart Mosaic (paid app available in iPhone App Store and Google Play Store) to download map data for your watch.
Before starting the map download, choose the optimum zoom level: more details vs. wide range.
Selecting a travel route, as shown in the video, will use the limited storage space more efficiently. 
Please be patient, the Garmin download is slow.
Make sure the phone display does not switch off during download.
