This data field displays a continuously updated average pace or speed over a user defined distance or time. The distance is either as metres/kilometres or yards/miles depending on the device settings. It can also be set to display the opposite units - metric when set to statute and vice versa. The data field shows pace as minutes and seconds per unit distance (kilometre or mile) or speed (kilometres or miles) per hour. The default is average pace over the last 100 metres or yards.</p>

https://imgur.com/a/5paHWUP "Comparison of Garmin instant pace (orange) and RollingAveragePace app from Connect IQ (blue). This was done on a flat 10-mile run at 8:43-8:44/mile (all mile-splits between 8:30 and 9:00). The chart shows how Garmin instant pace is slower than actual, with much higher variability, making the data field arguably useless. Averaging instant pace data gives about 9:40/mile, almost a minute slower than actual. The RollingAveragePace, kept to its default of averaging over the last 100 yards, shows much more reasonable numbers throughout the activity, with most readings between 8:00 and 9:00/mile. The average of these readings ends up around 8:39/mile, i.e. within 5s of activity-wide average, which is much more satisfactory. While this sort of test should be performed in various situations (especially of uneven pace, elevation change and poor GPS coverage), it is enough personally to prefer RollingAveragePace to Garmin's instant pace."

Can anyone feedback on the most consistent and reliable configuration in their testing for giving a stable instant pace? I found on my Fenix 6X setting the app to round the pace by 20 seconds seems to be the best. I haven't tried rounding by distance as GPS accuracy fluctuations I think would still cause spikes in the data like the native pace field which is why I went for time based config.

Thanks for your review Richard. Not sure why I didn't respond before :( The app picks up a distance every second. If you average over time it uses the distance directly. If you average over distance it uses the nearest figure it can calculate to your chosen number. You're right, GPS inaccuracies will cause ups & downs in your displayed pace but it always seemed to me they were similar over time or distance. I never tested that rigourously however.

Just super useful to get reliable pace. Works flawlessly. Can't figure why Garmin doesn't GB us this basic field. Thanks so much for your efforts.

Excellent datafield that should be included with the watch. Every serious runner would like it. Working flawlessly in my Venu, although the datafield is shown in lower fonts then the other fields of the same screen. Thanks!!!

I'm enjoying this app. Thanks for how configurable it is. I'm wondering what others use as a setting that balances accuracy with smoothing. I still find the 5 sec setting gives me more jumping around than I'd like.

Excellent work! I missed this feature after switching from an Apple Watch to a Fenix. With this Datafield the genius metric is back. No need to use the food pod anymore. Thank you very much!!!

Works amazingly! Wish there was an average/max option as well instead of instantaneous. Also would be nice to have the option of choosing meters even if device is set to U.S. imperial.

This data field should have been a default metric included with Garmin watch OS. I’m glad this is available and works as expected. Thank you for developing this.

Great app. It's simple, reliable and does exactly what is needed. All in all, it just works. Rare behaviour nowadays. )))

exactly what I was looking for! I wanted to see my avg speed over the last half mile vs average speed over the whole activity. I wanted to enter 0.5 as a distance. Connect IQ would not allow me to enter a decimal but I copied the text from another app and pasted, works as expected.
