This widget retrieves the elevation of your current location from the INTERNET. It does NOT rely on the built-in barometric altimeter. It can be useful to check the calibration of the sensors on your device. Press ENTER to check the last succesfully loaded elevation data and the sensor information (for comparison). The sensor information can come from the barometer or from the GPS. The choice is automatically made by the device's firmware. It is not possible to select the source within the Connect IQ environment.</p>

It'd be great if Garmin would implement a sixth star for these reviews. :-) The application itself itself fills in some functionality that I've LONG wanted in my GPS, having gotten tired of obtaining elevations for trailheads and summits beforehand to calibrate my unit. Zooming in on trailheads with Google Earth makes for pretty pictures, but it's tedious and, apparently, :-) quite unnecessary. The hypothetical sixth star goes to the developer, r.485, who worked with me to get past Garmin's issues with the Connect IQ Store. I wasn't able to unlock the purchased version of the Elevation widget until Rodrigo went many extra miles (km / 1.61 for those of you outside of the U.S. :-) to get my copy registered, including implementing some diagnostics in the application to check what the what was. :-) It turns out that Garmin has stored incorrect values for some of my vital statistics, making the generated key incorrect. The problem was solved, and I'm a very happy customer. The developer's follow-up and professionalism was very timely, very thorough, and very much appreciated! Thanks again!

Great idea... wish this sort of functionality was built into Garmin. Do you think it would be possible to have options to automatically calibrate the device's altitude from within the widget?

Thanks for the review, David. Currently it is not possible to include such a feature, and I don't think that Garmin will change it. The Connect IQ is designed as a safe environment, in the sense that the apps cannot modify the device settings, sensor calibration etc. Cheers!
