It's so strange that it doesn't provide a reasonable value. I get how it is better to use the stored DEM info to correct after download. But the elevation info on my 735 is always so close it just seems weird how that wouldn't translate to OK ascent info. Must be something hard to fix is Garmin hasn't done it.

This datafield works just as designed. I own FR245 without baro and I am happy to see at least some ascent data - even if not corrected. Just one thing - all datafields on FR245 have their titles in capitals. Could you please modify "Ascent" to "ASCENT"? It would blend beautifully with other fields. Thanks and great work.

Sorry but nothing better than just 2 stars. Only because it calculates "something" but "something" is by far inacurate and not even close to real values. I have read from the descitption of the app "If the watch does not have a barometric altimeter (e.g. most Forerunners), then elevation data comes from GPS data, which may not be totally accurate." but it should say "data will be different" because every time I used it the result was about 2 times higher than real result. Therefore, this app calculates "something" but this shouldn't be considered as any helpful infromation.

Thanks for the review. Actually, the app doesn't calculate *anything*. As stated in the description: "Total ascent is provided by the watch (not calculated by the app)." Also as stated in the description, if your watch doesn't have a baro altimeter, then the data the app shows you won't be great, which is why Garmin hides it during the activity and corrects it afterwards. Honestly, I didn't want to make this app for this very reason, but a couple of people asked for it and it was easy to make. Sorry it didn't meet your expections -- I should probably update the description to make it very clear that the data is not to be trusted if you don't have a baro.

Confused between this datafield and Elevation Change. Is this datafield equivalent to how Garmin Connect and Strava measures Elevation Gained (ignoring the accuracy issues)?

Hey Aslam, This field is just total ascent (as reported by your watch). Elevation Change is total ascent minus total descent (both as reported by your watch). (Another way to implement elevation change could've been to record elevation at start of activity and subtract it from current elevation, but I went with "total ascent - total descent" because it seemed to work slightly better. Neither Total Ascent nor Elevation Change make any kind of elevation corrections - they just show the data provided by the watch. This data field should show exactly the same data as the Total Ascent field on a watch with a baro altimeter. For watches without baro, it's the same as Garmin's internal total ascent field which is based on GPS (they don't make it available it because of accuracy issues.) If you don't have a baro, Garmin Connect and Strava will correct your elevation data after you upload your activity. If you have a baro, they won't apply corrections unless you manually turn on that feature. Thanks, Will

It's good but the value based on the gps is almost doubled. Could you improve the elevation corretion used by garmin for the devices without barometer? If this is possible this would be very wonderful! Thanks!

Hey Simone, thanks for the review! Unfortunately, total ascent is only able to display the "GPS elevation" reported by the watch in real time. Any elevation corrections applied by Garmin (or Strava) only happen after you sync your activity to Garmin Connect. I'm aware that the GPS elevation is not very accurate (which is why Garmin hides Total Ascent for devices without a barometer), but people requested this app which is why it exists. Hope it can still be somewhat useful for you.

It basically works, but it also demonstrates why Garmin hides the value. On my Forerunner 245 the value in this field was almost twice as high as the corrected value of Garmin Connect or Strava. My small test was walking up our local 50meter hill ... this datafield showed 94 at the end, Garmin app said 53 and Strava 54.
