Installed the app but it cycles through "GPS:Oldfix" and then the grid references, is there a patch which removes "GPS:Oldfix"?

The "Oldfix" message means that the device's operating system has described the GPS signal quality as "QUALITY_LAST_KNOWN:- The Location is based on the last known GPS fix". Garmin don't say what this means in terms of metres accuracy but the positional accuracy should be treated with caution... don't navigate along a cliff edge in a whiteout using only your device!! You can usually get rid of this message by turning on an activity and leaving the device with a clear view of the sky until it has calculated a good position. This can take some time if you've significantly changed location since your last good GPS position, or haven't used the device for a while. If that doesn't work try checking your GPS settings. Some GPS power saving modes on the device (like UltraTrac) might cause the OS to report this. If this is the case then you may wish to change the display time settings for this data field (in the phone app) so that the GridRef stays on screen for longer and the message appears for relatively less time. I hope this helps. Mark

Hi great addition to the watch, how do I change from a 6 fig grid to and 8 fig? Many thanks

Hi Darren, you can change the grid reference precision on the settings screen in the Garmin Connect mobile phone app. To do that, go to the menu in the Garmin Connect mobile app, click on Garmin Devices, select your device, click on Connect IQ Apps, click Data Fields, select the Grid Reference data field and then click Settings. From the next screen you'll be able to select the precision. I hope that helps (and feel free to click "Contact Developer" on the app details screen if it's not working for you). Best regards, Mark.

Afternoon, I have bought a fenix 5 and I'm after putting the grid coordinates on my watch, can I have a step by step guide on how to add the data fields please or be pointed in the direction of a manual to explain it? Once done I will upgrade to great as I'm sure it is!

Hi Craig, I can't contact you directly but please take a look at the instructions in the reply to Greg Morales' review a bit further down the page, and if that doesn't work then please drop me a note through the "Contact developer" link.

So I added this app to a data field for doing hikes but it keeps telling me unknown location and GPS: Old fix. I just want an 8 digit grid coordinate can someone help me fix this?

Ok I just got the fenix 5x and downloaded this mgrs app, now I have no idea how to find it on my watch

Hi, you've downloaded the Grid Ref. data field which is designed to be added to one of the screens in the built in apps. This allows you to get a grid reference while you're recording an activity - for example during a Run or Walk. For example, to add the data field on my Fenix 3 I have to start an activity - e. g. "Run" , then press the menu button, go to Settings - Current App - Data Screens and I can add the Grid Ref field from the "ConnectIQ" section. I hope that works for you, if you'd prefer to check a Grid Ref when not executing one of the built-in activity apps then you might want to try the Grid Ref widget instead - see: This allows you to quickly check the grid ref when you're cycling through the widgets (alongside the weather, music controls etc.).

Hi, hopefully you got this sorted now but if you're still struggling then send me a message and I'll talk you through how to add a data field to the built in apps.

I like to have Lat/Long and UK grid on the same face so after updating to a Fenix 5, this data field was a must. I contacted Mark and he updated the field straight away. Thanks again... Steve.

Fantastic little data field highly useful in the walk app on the hills in UK to quickly get a location rather than resort to compass and map all the time. Also really helpful discussion with the developer to a couple of questions I had and some guidance.

Fantastic app. Suprisingly useful when checking location or confirming a location. Just been using it to log Trig points in Derbyshire. Fab and works very well every time.

Just updated to the latest version, and even better, with choice of displays - many thanks for the improvement

25 de febrero de 2016 | Versión 1.2

Many thanks for providing this - finally my GPS can tell me where I am !! Similar to other review, if I was being picky, then would prefer just a fixed display rather than scrolling, 6 digits more than enough

2 de febrero de 2016 | Versión 1.1

Very useful addition to the 920XT. Might be useful to have the option of a fixed display (6 or 8 digit) rather than alternating - but that's being picky! It means the triathlon watch can be a backup nav aid on my hikes (and runs) now.

Thanks for adding this. it was nice to be able to get a UK grid on the 310XT, really surprised Garmin missed it off the fenix. Essential data if you're lost or need to let mountain rescue know where you are.

I'm hugely grateful that you've written this. Having an OS grid reference to correlate with a paper map is terribly useful in the UK, when hiking especially. And displaying the last known location if GPS lock is lost (and clearly showing that) is a big improvement on the built-in "Where Am I?" feature which does not show the location at all without GPS lock. (In fact the 920XT is currently pretty poor at explaining whether it has a GPS fix and what quality at all, so your display of that information is handy even without the coordinates.) (Now as I understand it, if only Garmin would support persistLocation() on the 920XT, we could also have something that actually allows one to save a new waypoint for some location other than where one is already standing! And optionally in OS grid format, using your nice conversions.)
