It only records steps when the timer is running. At the end of the session the step data are written into the FIT file for the entire session (total number of steps) and also for the individual laps (number of steps per each lap) so that you can check it in the activity summary on the Garmin Connect website or in the Garmin Connect application. </p>

Does exactly what I was looking for. Writes step data to fit files and also shows steps in walks, hikes and runs (once added to data fields). Amazed me that this data wasn’t available to view by activity in Garmin connect from a £700 watch, without a third party writing the functionality in. Good job, the man deserves a beer!

Nice but I am not sure that the step counter is accurate. A lot of steps are not being counted. And it does not appear on walking activities on Garmin connect (don't know why?). Thanks

Thanks a lot for this. Unfortunately, after adding the datafield to a certain activity (for example Cardio), it does not register/show any steps in the datafield. It just shows the datafield’s title “Steps” in the screen, combined with a blank field without any stepnumbers. Maybe I am doing something wrong? I would like to know if that is the case. I am using a Vivoactive 4. Thanks in advance!

Nice data field that enables step count in all activities. I would like to have additionally the continous step count data written into the fit file so that you see the data graph. (total step raise or steps/min) That will make the data field perfect, so I hope for this feature in an upcoming update.

Thank you for this must have Data field!!! Felt always ashamed when someone asked me during hiking about the steps. With this Data field must not be ashamed anymore... Nontheless hoe the heck such expensive "Sportwatches" should have this Data field in the Default settings. Kudos to the coder!

I just want to take a moment and say thank you for creating this - and +1 for making it publicly available via Github. As an aspiring Garmin developer it helps GREATLY when knowledgeable developers post their work for others to learn from. Thank you!

Really a good data field that Garmin ought to have included as stock. Why they haven't is strange, so great you've done us this favor.

Many, many thanks for updating your Datafield! It works now on my Forerunner 245 Music. Because Garmin has not included steps within an activity, this is a "must have" Datafield for me ;)

Works good, I use it for Indoor Cycling but I suspect that it is decreasing my vo2max values. I will stop use it and try. Thanks!

Add foot pod support to this app. Calculating steps from the footpod is more accurate. E.g. when you walk with a stroller, when you are wearing some bags. Number of steps can be calculated from the foot pod data.

Did you add the datafield to the selected activity? It can be done in the activity settings. After adding "Steps to FIT" Connect IQ field to the activity, it should show up on the selected page, and the number of steps are automatically saved into the FIT file during the entire session. After saving the activity, this data appears in the Connect page under details tab. Here is a video which explains how to set up custom datafields: https://youtu.be/LgcZQzhRw-A If the problem still exists, please contact me using the "Contact Developer" option. I will try to find out what the problem causes.
