This datafield shows useful live road gradient. </p><p>It does this much better than the stock gradient data field,</p><p>which seems to rely on GPS data, which is the worst sensor for the job.</p><p></p><p>A vertical speed / VAM field is also available.</p><p></p><p>Details:</p><p></p><p>- Uses the best available data: barometric altitude, bike speed sensors, GPS as a fallback.</p><p>- Adjustable smoothing: fast response vs. smooth values with variable length moving average filter.</p>

Hi, So happy to find your widget for my new 1040 solar. Realized very quickly how awful the default grade % data field is as it takes 15-20 seconds to reflect. Trying your widget on a century tomorrow. Do you take small requests? Can we get the % sign after the numbers? so instead of ___. ____ could we get ____ . ___ % this would be great! thanks for considering.

The 1030plus units have appalling lag and from what I read on teh forums, the 1040 units are no better. Gradient changes typically take around 15 secs and Garmin claim this is within their specs! Found that this app (on the 1 setting) reduces that lag to a more acceptable 3-5 secs, so from that perspesctive it does what it says on the tin! so great!! As the author pointed out, the smoothing value is compromise between response time and accuracy, with defaults at 1, 3, 5 and 7, however, as pointed out on aprevious review, the "1" setting does result in slightly wild gradient numbers (to be expected), however, I do find that while the "3" value improves the accuracy, the pay off is obviously the response time which is what most of us are looking for in these "laggy" units. So any chanve of getting a "2" value as a compromise? Either way, thanks for a great little app, its certainly helped out an issue which was a source of significant annoyance!

Tested on Edge 520 Plus and not satisfied with the app. I used older barometric computer that provides good enough grade values as a reference. I noticed data field value jumps rapidly often, sometimes it displays almost twice grade percentage as it really is. Also response is very slow. I don't recommend this app.

Basically, what the data field does is collect values for elevation and speed and filter them. You can try to adjust the filter to achieve more smooting in the settings. However, if your older computer gives truly better readings, it most likely has better sensors built-in. A big advantage is a dedicated bike speed sensor. If you rely on GPS speed, gradient values will be very jumpy, because GPS speed is very jumpy...

Tested it today and was very happy! The Garmin installed VAM and grades are too unreliable, together with VAM (by same developper) I use it to pace my rides on hill climbs with more than 5% gradient. Great job and thumbs up to the developper!

Downloaded it today and took it for a ride using the default 3s smoothing. It worked great! A little bit of lag in the readout of display, but the results were right on par with where the should be-great job! I'm trying out the 1s smoothing next, just out of curiousity, since we have a lot of shorter rollers where I ride. Definitely recommend the app.
