This data field* offers a secondary way to view Dexcom CGM data** at a glance on compatible Garmin wearables and cycling computers***. The data field displays estimated glucose levels and trend direction on your device during an activity — so there’s no need to interrupt your workout to view your numbers on a smartphone. The Dexcom data field is a game changer for my type 1 diabetes control while cycling. My caveats are that you have to do everything correctly to set up your Dexcom CGM to connect with your Garmin device (mine is an Edge 830 and I use Dexcom G6 CGM and I’m based in the UK). YouTube has some good tutorials but just be sure you do everything in the right order. Also make sure that your G6 App is set to allow sharing and is connected to at least one third party (although I set up an alias account to do this). Don’t rush the set up as it can get very frustrating if you don’t do everything correctly. My other comment is that the readings on your garmin are not updated as soon as your G6 app updates. There seems to be a delay of up to about 5 minutes. That isn’t an issue unless your glucose is running very low or high. Look at the arrows to give you an indication of the direction your glucose is going. Do note that to keep your device displaying your glucose levels you need to have the G6 App and the Garmin Connect app open so don’t close them. Overall it is a very helpful connection to help with diabetic control whilst on the bike.
