Wind Field

Description

Live Wind data on your Garmin! Now the number 1 rated app for Garmin devices! (if only Garmin's website knew how to sort properly) Please note that this app requires a payment of $5 US per year. You also get access to my Forecastr data field for the same payment.</p><p></p><p>Wind Field gives you real time wind speed and direction on your data screen during a workout. Wind information is based on your current latitude and longitude. The direction arrow combines the actual wind direction with your riding direction to show the perceived direction. So if you have a head wind, the arrow will be pointing toward you. In the case of a tail wind, the arrow will point forward. Of course this is all assuming you have your Garmin mounted on your stem or handlebar with a standard mount. If you have it in your jersey pocket, then it's not going to be very useful. ;)</p>

What’s New

5.0.3 Bug fixes, UI tweaks</p><p></p><p>5.0.2 Something for everyone! Big rewrite to better display on watches. New optional field added for Edge 520 devices. New 3rd optional field on all other Edges and 2 more optional values - Garmin Battery and Garmin Temperature. Plus the optional fields are now bigger and easier to see. As always, if it doesn't look right on your device or fields aren't lined up, please reach out via contact developer and send me a picture so i can fix it. Thanks all!</p>

Really great to have this info. Those who told me "anyone can see where the wind is coming from!" soon were asking me for wind info on our rides. Great for rotating a paceline correctly. Developer is a good dude

A brilliant application. The indications mostly coincide with the actual wind direction. Absolutely number 1

This is a "must have app"! It is on my main display and is so valuable for balancing your effort in windy conditions (which is all the time where I live). Well implemented app, and I highly recommend it. Absolutely worth it!

I'm not sure if I love this or hate this! The data field works perfectly (as long as I can keep my Connect app to stay connected, but that's a Garmin thing) and has earned a spot on my main page. I'm just not sure if I really want to know I'm pushing into a 25 mph headwind...

i'm half considering an update that shows "keep on swimming" with an image of that Nemo fish when the winds get high!

This is "the app" if you enjoy going after Strava KOMs/PRs. It's a mainstay on my Edge 820's main screen

After installing, setting up, and doing a short test ride, I really like Wind Field. Installation instructions are very limited, so this may help: Install from Garmin Express on your computer (or the Garmin Connect app on your phone) and set Wind App as a single data field on a data screen on the Garmin so the registration code will have room to display. Start an activity outside as it seems to need GPS data to add data to the wind field. Within about 5 minutes, the wind field will show two different messages ("special" and "register'), then the registration code in the form of "abcde-fghij", all lower case letters. Copy the code and go to www.windfield.app, enter the code, and pay $5 for 1-year access. After you register the code and pay for it, start another activity outside. It will take 3-5 minutes for the Wind Field data field to sync and display the current data without the notices. Note: You can choose two secondary fields along with the wind speed. To set or change them, connect to Garmin Express, choose IQ Apps, and the Wind Field Settings page. You can choose among Wind Factor, Temperature, Humidity, UV Index, Ozone, Feels Like Temp, or Gusts. You can also choose to get weather alerts on the Wind Field settings page.

Thanks Dan! I have a good bit of instructions in my faq on my registration page at windfield.app. Not sure where you saw “special” though. That’s not anywhere in my registration process. It could be part of your local weather alert (configured in options and on by default) if something like “special weather advisory” is happening at the time

Fantastic app. Didn't realise how much I used it until there was a glitch yesterday - instead of wind speed and direction, I had a "G" . I got in touch with Scott and within 24 hours he had responded and solved the problem. While I was fiddling around in the IQ store I noticed that Scott is offering his Forecastr App to subscribers to Wind Field. I've downloaded that and added to one of my Edge 520 screens. I hope there are a few showers when next I get out - I'm sick of watering.

I’ll blame my QA department for that bug. Oh wait that’s me. :( The “G” is actually a really poorly drawn “IQ!” It’s what garmin shows when any custom app crashes. Happy tailwinds!

If you only get one widget this is a must-have. Wind speed and direction is so important when training or if you are just out cycling. Now Scott has added more fields like temperature. If you need any help he is very responsive and will address any issue.

Are you doing the update for the 520 too? Thanks

Developer Reply
June 17, 2019, scottbeam

sorry, the 520 doesn't have enough memory. i'll always support the standard wind data and arrow for it, but for the new features, you'll need a 520 plus, 530, 820, 830, 1000 or 1030.

I need to update the description. The new settings are not available on the 520 or watches. They don’t have enough memory to run all the new features. Sorry! All the other edge devices are working including the 520 plus and the new 530 and 830.

Great data field. At my location the wind often gets stronger and stronger, so it's good to know what slows me down. But one question, at your announcement to 4.0.1 you wrote 'Settings now allow you to optionally display...' Sorry, I cannot find a settings dialog to change these kind of parameters, am I wrong? But again, great app (calling it a data field would be a way of understatement)!
