While in general, it is good; it does conflict with Garmin's Body Battery and doesn't allow it to recharge overnight. Also as it counts an an "activity" it is necessary to silence your phone as otherwise it constantly shouts out activity stats like heartrate (assuming you have it set to notify you while performing an activity) while trying to sleep. Sort those out and it will be 5*.

Works well BUT this keeps your body battery from recharging after your sleep.

Works as expected, could be nice to be able to chose different vibration modes/strength

This worked well for alarming silently in the period I specified. I did notice the Garmin Connect Body Battery counts Smart Wake as an activity and therefore doesn’t recharge or credit my time asleep to the Body Battery when sleeping with this app. Is there a fix for this?

It works perfect. No issues, works exactly as described on my fenix 5. Thank you very much for your work.

J'aime beaucoup le principe de votre appli par contre même en désactivant le rétroéclairage je perds en général plus de 30% de la batterie. J'espère que vous ferez une mise à jour pour qu'elle s'active une heure avant le réveil par exemple.

Hello, sorry to hear that. What Garmin device are you using? It behaves very different on all devices. Please contact us via "Contact Developer" so we could figure out what the problem is.

I really like the concept but it’s unusable as the battery dies in one night (e.g. 75%-2%). Would be great if it didn’t have to be an activity as then doesn’t follow watch “sleep settings”.

Hello, sorry to hear that. Unfortunately the battery usage is not really under our control and highly depends on the watch model you are using. We did everything to reduce battery usage to the minimum and for some watches we achieve 4-5% over night. As by design all Connect IQ Apps are "Activities" we can not do anything about it. Could we ask what device you are using? Thanks.

Great no-nosense application. Hope Garmin allow it to work with Stress Level and Body Battery in the future.

Installed the SmartWake app on my Fenix 6S Sapphire. Followed all the instructions, including settings for backlight/alerts/tones and making the app a “favorite”. The app name appears on my list of apps, but it won’t open or start. I can’t set the app’s alarm. Selecting any other app works just fine, so I know it’s the SmartWake app that is broken. Sent a message to the developer, but he/she never responded. Maybe they’ll respond to this review.

Hi Kevin! Sorry for you feedback being unanswered. Although Its a fee app and we ineed get a lot of mails, we aim to answer every single one of them. We could not reproduce the bug you mentioned. We successfully tested it on a Fenix 6S Pro and we could open it and set an alarm. It works perfectly fine in the simulator as well. You might want to update your firmware or reset the watch. Another issue could be that app would not load properly from ConnectIQ store. You can try to delete it and reinstall it, but please don't forget to sync in between.

As mentioned in other comments, battery usage is an issue. 70% of my vivoactive 4 wasn't enough to get through the night. Display light was turned off and the screen was locked. Hope for a fix, thanks

Hi Faedi! We hope for a fix, too. As mentioned in other comments, battery drain is due to unwanted GPS usage. We think about cancelling support for vivoactive 4 devices until garmin finally fixes the bug. You can find more information here https://forums.garmin.com/developer/connect-iq/i/bug-reports/gps-always-on-during-activity-recording-in-ciq-apps and here https://forums.garmin.com/sports-fitness/healthandwellness/f/venu/209601/gps-activated-for-non-gps-actives

tried it on Forerunner235. I like the concept, but it can not be used because my battery is always empty before the morning comes. Also I could not Switch of the backlight of the Display. It shines all the night long. Too bad.

Hi Nick! In the section "app info" you may find more information for best performance including backlight. Since all tonal alarm, vibration and backlight settings derive from the general setting of the watch you need to do some adjustments prior to using it. Make sure you change backlight "during activity". All connectIQ apps derive their settings from that category. Regarding battery usage, can you tell us more about it? Did you start with 100% and it is empty before you wake up? How often do you usually charge your watch. There are several users that complained about excessive battery drain on forerunner 235 in the past.

Absolutely great concept, however, it doesn't actually work as I seem to be swipping left accidentally in my sleep and cancelling the alarm/activity.

Developer Reply

Hi Benji, you might want to lock your screen during runtime of the app. Depending on your watch, garmin also offers auto-lock. You find more information in the section "App info".

There was no vribration on alarm (vivoactiveHR). Gesture for backlight is off and vibration is set to high. Also the "cog wheel" button is missing on app screen.

Developer Reply
January 13, 2020, BlackTusk

Hi Manka. It seems totally fine in the connectIQ simuator. All buttons are there. Since we do not have a vivoactiveHR we need your input on that one. Can you send some screens to the contact adress? Did you switch off gesture for backlight in the menu entry "during activity" or "not during activity". Since garmin connectIQ apps create an activity (by design) you might want to make sure that you set it correctly. We do not alter vibration in any way. It is a global setting of the watch. Vivoactive HR has known issues with the vibration alarm and intensity. You might want to check garmin forum for that.

Alarm itself seems to work. But uses too much battery to be really useful. It drains from 60-70% per night. My device: Vivoactive 4

Developer Reply
December 20, 2019, BlackTusk

Hi Marko. Some users reported that high battery consumption is due to gps activation on vivoactive 4. We do not even use gps feature explicitly in the app. When we find that to be true, we will report this bug to Garmin. There might be a workaround for that, but we have to check if this is resonable, since we would have to change our app for every device just to be able to support vivoactive 4.

Paul Mannarino

The sleep cycle detection and alarm seem to work great. The battery drain however is very bad. It usually drains about 60% per night. I have the Vivoactive 4.

December 20, 2019, BlackTusk

Hi Paul! Thanks for the feedback. It seems that we have an issue with battery consumption on vivoactive 4. We will investigate it (see answer on top of your review) but we cannot promise anything. Best case we can find a solution or garmin can fix the problem. Worst case we have to discontinue support for vivoactive 4.

Great app. Uses less battery than Sleep as Android. Better with "save as activity" turned off. Would like to see stress and body battery fixed. Would like gentle vibrations with increased intensity.

Developer Reply
December 8, 2019, BlackTusk

Hi MT, thanks for your input! As I mentioned below, this is beyond our control. You can help us by forwarding the issue with the body battery to the garmin support. You can also help us by adressing the stress issue. There might be a chance that it can be calculated retrospectively. Interestingly sleep can be calculated although an activity is running. Vibration alarm sounds like a good idea for a new feature!

Developer Reply

Hi Milan, thanks for your review. You can help us by forwarding the issue with the body battery to the garmin support. It is a known issue and they said that the device team will fix it with one of the next firmware upgrades. As of now, stress cannot be evaluated during runtime of an activity. I guess the main purpose of an activity is to do a workout, which does not ceate usable data for stress evaluation. Again this is a usecase that was probably not forseen by Garmin, but if enough people adress it, they might consider changing it. For us, creating an App was the only way to implement the sleep phase alarm.

Per Klitgaard

It drains more battery than i like. But its a really good app. I like the idea with preset hours of sleep, so it could wake me after 7 hours of sleep. I was a bit annoyed that it records my activity to strava. But have seen that it has been fixed :-)

Thank you, Intika! We are definitely looking into the option of a sleep goal. Would you rather set it to two hours from the moment you adjust it or from the moment you presumably fell asleep? Feel free to contact us directly.

Michał drogadozycia.pl
October 15, 2019 | Version 1.2.1

After last update it drains battery, more than 30, even 40 percent for a night. And it,'s impossible to set UP a snooze. Please do something about it otherwise it will be useless.

Developer Reply
October 17, 2019, BlackTusk

Hi Michal, I am afraid but we could not reproduce this. Battery consumption is 3% on the new Fenix5, 5% on Fenix5 plus, and between 6-8% on Forerunner 645. Please contact us via "contact developer" and tell us more about your device, so we can try to figure it out. Meanwhile, you can have a look at the description of the application. In sections "features" and "whats new", you may find entries that refer to snooze and how to disable and enable it. Just open the app and hit the button where the cogwheel button is located (on vivoactive devices use touch display for more than 2 seconds) and go to menue entry snooze to switch it on or off.

Thank you Alf for your feedback! And thank you for pointing out the UI issue on vivoacitve in the first place. On the simulator it always worked like it does now, thats why it took us some time to reproduze the bug. but better late than never. We completeley implemeted the pickers from scratch, avoiding any standard controls from vivoactive watches.
