Race Screen

Description

Race Screen is a data field that displays the most relevant information for running a race or training. It also corrects the difference between the GPS-measured distance and the actual race course distance: pressing the lap button when passing a course marker rounds the distance it displays and adjusts the average pace accordingly. If you set a race distance, it predicts your finish time.</p><p...

Awesome 'data field'. I've been using this since December 2016, and would definitely not entertain going running with it being front and centre. It's my go-to data field on F3HR. Keep up the good work.

Still no color for cadence although it's checked. HR color works fine.

For the recent Forerunner 235 setup question, on the second screen select a default view that has only 1 data field. Then for field 1, choose Race Screen.

App showing meters and not miles. Thoughts? My watch's base setting is miles.

Developer Reply
June 27, 2018, dp0750

If your watch uses miles as distance units, then the elapsed distance will be displayed in miles by the data field and pressing the lap button will round the distance displayed to the nearest mile. Meters are only used by the user to specify the race distance in the app settings. This requires, when inserting the race distance in the app settings, converting miles to meters by multiplying by 1609. After that, you can forget about meters since the app will display distances in miles, if that is your preferred unit.

I have it loaded on my Forerunner 235 and am trying to set it for field 1 in Screen 2 but Screen 2 already has 3 fields set up. I see from your instructions that the screen has to only have 1 field but I can not find any instructions in the Forerunner manual to remove fields. How I do this?

Developer Reply

As noted by Rob Lehman above (thanks), first change the default view of Screen 2 by scrolling to Layout and setting it to 1 Field. Then scroll to Field 1, and in ConnectIQ Fields select Race Screen.

I got it loaded on my Fenix 5. I have gone on two runs and this data fields distance is not the same as my watches own distance field. Not sure how this happens, but it’s unusable for training purpose except for the HR :(

This is explained under IMPORTANT NOTE in Race Screen's App Info in the ConnectIQ Store: The distance displayed by this data field may differ from the built-in distance field. This is by design, to help the user correct the difference between the GPS-measured distance and the official course distance when running a race by triggering a manual lap when passing an official course marker. If you wish to use this field only as a way to display information nicely in a single screen, you can switch off the distance/average pace adjustment and set the race distance and target time to 0 in the app settings.

Am excited to give this a try, but can't figure out how to get it to my Forerunner 645 Music watch. I have downloaded it to my Garmin Connect account, but can't seem to get it added from here. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you!

As noted in reply to similar reviews/questions below and also in the Description in the ConnectIQ Store (click More to see the description in full), Race Screen is not an App but a Data Field. It will not appear in the list of Apps on the watch. Instead, you need to display it as a field within another App, like the standard Run App. You first install Race Screen on your watch using Garmin Express or Garmin Express Mobile. Then go to Settings, Apps, Run, Data Screens. Scroll down the list of Screens and until you reach one that is Off, toggle to On. Scroll down to Layout, if it is set to something else change to 1 Field. Scroll down to Field 1, in ConnectIQ Fields select Race Screen. Garmin limits the number of Connect IQ data fields that you can display across all data screens to a maximum of 2, so you will only be able to select Race Screen if you are displaying at most 1 other ConnectIQ data field in all of the data screens.

I have a Fenix 3 HR myself and it can be set up without problems. You first install Race Screen on your watch using Garmin Express or Garmin Express Mobile. Race Screen is not an App but a Data Field so it will not appear in the list of Apps on the watch. Instead, you need to display it as a field within another App, like the standard Run App. Go to Settings, Apps, Run, Data Screens. Maybe I'm missing it - but there seems to be no documentation or setup instructions. I've downloaded; the app shows up in Garmin Express; I sync my watch (935) and nothing. It isn't on the list of apps. So - I can't comment on the functionality of the app because I can seem to get it added to the list of apps that normally show up on the selection list on the watch. And incidentally - the configuration screen on Garmin Express is anything but clear. I have to enter the distance in meters?

Tested it during some training runs, seems to work fine. I will see it during my next race. But obviously it needs much more battery than all the other datafields I used before on my FR 235. I'm not sure if the battery will survive a 10k or even a half marathon.

Really great app. Have you been able to test it with a vivoactive 3? There is no lap button on the vivoactive so could the rounding off distance function be mapped to a double-tap on the screen instead?

Developer Reply
May 13, 2018, dp0750

Race Screen is compatible with the Vivoactive 3. While the device does not have a lap button, a double-tap on the screen while passing a race distance marker triggers a new lap and Race Screen uses this to round the distance and adjust the average pace. I do not have direct access to a Vivoactive 3, but have checked with users who have one that it works properly. If you run into any trouble, please get in touch using the Contact Developer link under Additional Information.

I think I would love this if it would work but I'm trying to set it up on my forerunner 235 and when I go to Activity settings to Data Screens then Screen 1 set the Layout to 1 Field then when I try to set it to Connect IQ (shows I have 2/2 added) then when I select this I get a "replace or remove a connect IQ field on any data screen to add another" Is there something else I need to do?

Developer Reply
May 10, 2018, dp0750

This is not a problem attributable to Race Screen, but simply a general restriction set by Garmin: you can have at most 2 different ConnectIQ data fields across all data screens. It seems you already have two other ConnectIQ data fields in use. As the message says, to use a new one (Race Screen or any other) you have to first remove one of the fields you have in use.

Hi great app, just wondering how do I set my distance for finish time prediction? Im doing a half this weeeknd and want to see my finish time as I go. I cant figure it out on the app. Thank you.

Developer Reply
May 12, 2018, dp0750

You set the target distance in the app settings either from Garmin Express on your computer or from Garmin Connect Mobile on your phone (it cannot be done directly on the watch). If you do it from Garmin Connect Mobile on your phone, tap on your device, then on Activities & App Management, Data Fields, Race Screen, Settings. If you do it from your computer, click on IQ Apps, then on the three dots next to Race Screen. To get a finish time prediction, set Race distance (metres) to a distance in meters. So for the half marathon set to 21097. Then Save. While the setting needs to be specified in meters, Race Screen will still display the distance in the units set in your device, km or miles. If you wish, you can also set a target time in seconds. So, for a 1:45 target time, you would set Race target finish time (seconds) to 6300. Just convert your finish time to seconds and use that. All this will do is change the background color when running behind target. Give it a try. A splash screen should show briefly the target distance and target time when you first display race screen when you about to start an activity. Keep in mind Race Screen only adjusts the distance and pace on its own screen, other screens will show the standard (unadjusted) values.

This data field has everything you want in one place! I did my first pacing gig on the weekend, 3hr30 for a marathon, and was super stressed that I'd be off the mark. This app allowed me to come in perfectly 30 secs early, exactly as planned. The ability to round off to official markers kept me on the right pace, despite questions of my accuracy!

Race Screen is not a stand-alone app on the watch but a data field that can display information within any of the standard apps on your watch. So it just runs within the standard Run app on the watch (or any other standard app). To use Race Screen after downloading it from the Garmin Connect IQ store to your watch, configure a data screen in the relevant App on your device (for example the built-in Run app) with 1 Field as the layout, then in Field 1 select Connect IQ Fields, then select Race Screen.

Is there a way to change the length of the race from meters to miles?

Developer Reply
March 13, 2018, dp0750

Meters are only used to specify the target distance in the App settings. The watch will then display this distance in whatever distance unit is set in your watch. So if you are running a half-marathon, set the target distance to 21098 meters in the App settings. Then, if your device's distance unit is set to miles, it will display 13.1 miles.
