Use the flashlight.</p><p>This is a very simple widget that you can use to get a little light while in complete darkness. </p><p>It turns the screen white and the backlight on while in use.</p><p></p><p>TIP : use the Garmin Express utility to rearrange widgets so that the flashlight is the last on the list; it will then be displayed first when pressing the UP button while displaying the watch face.</p>

Kind of a (very) late reply but here's why ... Garmin does not provide any means to increase the backlight past the system setting; according to the docs : "The back light will always respect the back light timeout settings on the device. Behavior of this feature may also change depending on device settings."
