It counts the number of steps done during the activity and records them in the FIT file. You can see the number of steps data in your Connect IQ.

Super data field so you can see how many steps you take on a actual activity.

As others said, the counting seems to work on my fenix3 as datafield, but it shows in garmin connect for this activity only 254 steps in total (8500 real steps)... the table for the laps shows a wrong number too. Even the sum of all steps from the laps is not the same as the sum of steps in total in the overview of the activity.

This is exactly what I was looking for. I wasn't able to see the steps of walking activities. The problem is that the value shown on the Garmin Connect on my PC is not the same displayed on the data field when I stop the activity. On my watch it shown 322 (which is correct), but on the Garmin Connect online was only 66. If you could try to fix it, it would be very good.

I would really appreciate this app. I use a Forerunner 230 with a foot pod. Unfortunately, it not count the steps of foot pod. It only counts the steps of the internal accelerometer,

Displays accurate stepcount during activity in vivoactives display, but not in garminconnect. Walking yesterday 8.4km and in vivoactive it shows 9040steps but in garminconnect shows only 207 steps.

Good idea but doesn't work. Unless I really did run a half marathon in 134 steps (in garmin connect)

Awesome idea, but unfortunately it doesn't work, at least on my Vivoactive HR. During my workout I did about 2000 steps (according to the live in-activity readout), but in Garmin Connect it says I only did 66 steps. Pretty massive discrepancy. Really too bad since it would have been really useful otherwise.
