For canoeing, kayaking, ocean ski, outrigger and stand up paddle boards. Owners of a Vaaka Paddle Cadence sensor can now see distance per stroke data, as well as stroke rate data as they paddle. The Vaaka Distance Per Stroke app now makes it possible to see your distance per stroke displayed on your Garmin device in real time. Upload it from Connect IQ. Select it as a Connect IQ data field on your watches data display screen and see distance per stroke along side your other metrics, stroke rate, elapsed time or distance and heart rate. The Vaaka Distance Per Stroke app will only work if you are using a Vaaka Paddle Cadence Sensor.

There is no open standard for Canoe/kayak stroke rate data. If Vaaka developed one there is no guarantee that Garmin or other fitness software companies would adopt it. Vaaka uses the bike cadence protocol to send stroke rate data so will work on any GPS device that is compatible with third party bike cadence sensors. We did this because the bike cadence protocol is supported by almost every fitness GPS company. There is no reason why Garmin could not allow you to see this cadence data in sport modes other than Bike but at present they do not. So to display both stroke rate and distance per stroke you need a Vaaka sensor and a Fitness GPS device running in bike sport mode. For later Garmin devices we do have a Vaaka paddling App on Garmin Connect IQ which is a custom sport mode for Paddlesports.

Good to add vaaka dps to preferred app, but is it possible to also add a stroke rate field to connect IQ? Kayaking app doesn't currently include a cadence option. Being able add both stroke rate and dps would be good.

Using it for kayak, I would like to see a stroke per minute instead.

To answer the previous question. The Vaaka distance per stroke data field will only work with a Vaaka paddle cadence sensor.

Great for any paddlesport coach or athlete. Once the App is downloaded and installed on the watch, all that's needed is to add Vaaka DPS as a data field. Meters per stroke is displayed on the watch next to the other data fields that have been set up. Amazing to be able to see stroke rate and how many meters from each stroke.
