Smart Bike Lights

Description

For support you can either use the "Contact developer" (please provide the email address so that I can reply back) or by posting on the Garmin forum thread:</p><p>https://forums.garmin.com/developer/connect-iq/f/showcase/248492/smart-bike-lights-data-field-bike-lights-control-widget</p><p></p><p>Smart Bike Lights is a data field IQ Connect application for Garmin devices, that displays and controls ANT+ lights. Garmin has a built-in "Auto" light mode setting, which automatically adjusts the light intensity based on the ambient light or time of day. The issue with "Auto" mode is that is not configurable and that is why this application introduces a special "Smart" mode, which is fully configurable based on sunset, sunrise, speed, ... (check all filters below). The source code is available on GitHub: https://github.com/maca88/SmartBikeLights, where issues/feature requests can be opened.</p>

Hello, I bought the bon contractor Ion 200 RT light, if unfortunately only 3 orange lines are loaded, not 5 green ones, even after a second load it stays with 3 orange, I have also deleted the ION 200 from the 1040 And again newly connected, unfortunately it remains with 3 orange lines. Thank you for your help. Best regards Thomas

Unfortunately this is a known bug of Ion 200 RT and Flare RT lights. In order to display the correct battery level you need to factory reset the light after every charge, this is what I do for my Flare RT to fix the issue. You can check the following Garmin thread for more info: https://forums.garmin.com/developer/connect-iq/f/discussion/242959/bontrager-flare-rt-battery-bug

Hello, First of all, thanks for Smart Bike Lights, it works really well, the only one is the battery display, which consists of 5 green bars if the Varia 515 is fully charged, so you think that every bar means around 20% capacity, but already With 3 bars, the color of the beams changes to red, which soon means charging, actually 3 bars should still be around 60% capacity, how does that come? Many Thanks Thomas

Hi, with 3 bars, the color of battery cells changes to orange not red, but indeed on some devices orange looks like red. Red is used only when one bar is left, which normally means that the battery level is below 10%.

Hello have a Varia515 as well as 1040 garmin edge. Actually wants to have the function light on at cars and otherwise off. The first problem is the light on in cars, but no longer goes out. Does the light configuration only work on the active training side where the IQ is in the data field and as soon as you swipe to another side, no more!? The next one hooks the switching on the data field, so can not just click through the light modes from S to M and N. Must then always swipe to the next page and back. Of course it would be nice with brake function, unfortunately I didn't manage that. Here is my data ###0,73535488#2,2!CARON:1:6:0:0I[300]0!:1:0:0:0D=1##6,5:VariaNL!2,:-1,Off:0!1,Solid:4!1,Day Flash:7!1,Night Flash:6!1,Peloton:5#0::#0:1#123!:123!#B3843##3#0#0 With Brake ###0,73535488#3,3!CARON:1:6:1:0I[300]0!BRAKE:1:4:3:0A[-10!:1:0:0:0D=1##6,5:Varia NLB!2,:-1,Off:0!1,Solid:4!1,Day Flash:7!1,Night Flash:6!1,Peloton:5#0::#0:1#123!:123!#B3843##3#0#0 Sincerely, Andreas

Hi, the filters should work also if the data field is not on the selected screen. As your configuration has "Force Smart mode" it should stay in Smart mode all the time, just make sure that the light is in Smart mode the after you set the configuration. Here is the updated configuration that has also braking: ###0,73535488#3,3!BRAKE:1:4:0:0A[-10!CARON:1:6:0:0I[300]0!:1:0:0:0D=1##6,5:VariaNL!2,:-1,Off:0!1,Solid:4!1,Day Flash:7!1,Night Flash:6!1,Peloton:5#0::#0:1#123!:123!#B3843##3#0#0 Please use "Contact developer" for additional support.

I'd just like the varia 515 to turn on based on my Edge's ambient light sensor. NOT based on sunset, fixed times, etc. Of course, when a car is approaching from behind it should start blinking, regardless of time of day. Any ideas?

Unfortunately Connect IQ does not provide an API for ambient light sensor. There is a feature request (https://forums.garmin.com/developer/connect-iq/i/bug-reports/ambient-light-sensor-api-access) for it, where Garmin suggested that it could be implemented for future devices. In case you have Edge 1040 Solar, you can use the "Solar Intensity" filter.

This is the most useful connect IQ app I have used! Finally I can make my bike lights do what I want instead of what the Garmin engineers thought I would need! My configuration: Front Light (ION 200 RT): default=off - day flash if speed greater than 15km/h Radar Tail Light (Varia 515): default=off - day flash if car approaching (= nearer than 300m and threat level greater none) - solid if acceleration lower than -15% (= braking light) I hope that this app will not drain my Edge 530's battery to quickly. I will see after my next long ride...

I've tried to configure Varia RTL 510 (generally off /battery save/ but BRAKE SOLID light + BLINK when car detected) - after some initial tests I decided to contact Developer (for help) with my test/config line. Very quick and kind reply from Developer solve the issue. Impressive approach and tool! Thank You very much! (ps. Varia works /as expected/ brilliant with suggested config line)

Nice tool. It is good to to see the actual state at the display. An online simulator for checking of the filters (e.g. daylight, radar, ...) will be fine.

This is great. Important to read full description to understand, including after More...... There are still problems, including but not limited to unstable connections between Edge 830 and Bontrager lights, either occasional random loss during rides, or a profound link failure when Garmin connected to mobile phone by Bluetooth. These are not caused by this App, but are problems with the Garmin device itself

I have only just found this and configured it, but I'm already really happy. I bought Garmin's UT800 headlight and like the set and forget auto functionality, but due to it being overzealous with high beam at night, the battery runs out too fast. I have setup this app to only use high beam at much faster speeds, so I am confident this will help me get through night rides!

Great (imho the best) tool to manage your light network. My lights are off by default. My rear light flashes during the day when a car approaches from behind and lights up when I brake. At sunset, my rear and front light are automatically switched on.

Absolute must have for Varia Radar users. This gives the oppty. to run you varia light in off position and starts blinking when car approaches. Something that should have to be in the Varia itself from day one. There are tons of other use-cases, but this is my single most important one. In dark conditions I use the Garmin Light Network settings. Another plus of the app, it's nog exclusive!

That is very strange, error 4 means that the configuration contains a light mode that is not supported by the lights, which shouldn't be the case as your configuration is valid. Please try to re-pair the lights again by using the Garmin sensor menu. If it still doesn't work, try to clear the "Lights Configuration" setting to see if the error 4 will be gone. Please contact me by using "Contact Developer" in case the re-pairing didn't work.

The custom config feature is very useful for non-touch Garmin. And make the light as smart as HomeKit’s light

Really useful datafield on my Garmin Edge Explore. Just one annoying bug: When I start recording on my Garmin, the lights starts blinking even though I have selected sunset-sunrise in the filter. I have to manually scroll left to the datafield of Smart Bike Lights and as soon as the datafield “loads in” the lights stop blinking as expected. So it seems the datafield isn’t active until you scroll to it? I have solved it temporarily by having Smart Bike Lights as my starting datafield when I start recording a ride. But then I have to scroll to my map every single time. Otherwise, really good job! Using ION 200RT and ION Flare RT

Developer Reply
September 18, 2021, maca88

Thanks for the positive review. Your assumption is correct, the data field will be started only when you scroll to it and unfortunately there is nothing that I can do to fix it. Most likely Garmin did this for performance reasons to prevent screen freezes when starting an activity.

Struggling a bit however I am sure this will work. I have both Varia's head and tail from Garmin with 1080 plus and I want the setup to work automatically based on the time of the day (i.e. day, night etc.) using this application
