# Adaptive Lactate Estimation Model for Garmin Connect IQ

## Project Objective

The goal of this project is to develop a **real-time lactate estimation model** for cycling that provides the most realistic possible estimate of an athlete's current blood lactate concentration without requiring continuous blood sampling.

The model combines multiple physiological parameters, including:

* Power output (watts)
* Heart rate
* Continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) data
* Anaerobic workload above the individual lactate threshold
* Time-based physiological smoothing
* Individual calibration using actual blood lactate measurements

Through repeated calibrations, the system continuously adapts and evolves into a highly personalized metabolic model that reflects the athlete's unique physiological response, energy metabolism, and lactate kinetics.

The long-term objective is to achieve the highest possible estimation accuracy by continuously learning from each athlete's individual training and calibration data.

# Adaptives Laktat-Schätzmodell für Garmin Connect IQ

## Projektziel

Ziel dieses Projekts ist die Entwicklung eines intelligenten Echtzeit-Laktatmodells für den Radsport, das eine möglichst präzise und praxisnahe Schätzung der aktuellen Laktatkonzentration ermöglicht – **ohne kontinuierliche Blutentnahmen**.

Hierzu werden verschiedene physiologische und leistungsbezogene Parameter in einem adaptiven Modell miteinander kombiniert:

* Leistung (Watt)
* Herzfrequenz
* Glukosewerte aus einem Continuous Glucose Monitoring (CGM)
* Anaerobe Belastung oberhalb der individuellen Leistungs- bzw. Laktatschwelle
* Zeitabhängige Glättungs- und Adaptionsmechanismen
* Individuelle Kalibrierung anhand real gemessener Laktatwerte

Durch regelmäßige Kalibrierungen mit tatsächlichen Laktatmessungen lernt das System die individuellen Stoffwechselreaktionen des Athleten kennen und entwickelt sich schrittweise zu einem personalisierten Stoffwechselmodell. Dadurch lassen sich Trainingsbelastung, Ermüdung und metabolische Prozesse deutlich präziser abbilden als mit herkömmlichen Ansätzen, die ausschließlich auf Leistung oder Herzfrequenz basieren.

Langfristiges Ziel ist die Bereitstellung einer zuverlässigen Echtzeit-Laktatschätzung direkt auf Garmin-Geräten über **Garmin Connect IQ**. Das System soll Athletinnen und Athleten bei der Trainingssteuerung, Wettkampfplanung und Leistungsdiagnostik optimal unterstützen und gleichzeitig eine kontinuierliche, individuelle Anpassung an den persönlichen Stoffwechsel ermöglichen.
