The manual, covering every field, every setting and every mark on the graph:
https://bit60.de/moon-metrics-pro/manual.html

A watch face about the Moon and the night. It computes the position of the Moon and the Sun on the watch itself: no phone connection, no API key, no server requests.

WHAT IT SHOWS

There are two layouts. Moon Night is the detailed one: time, date, the Moon, the next moonrise or moonset, a brightness bar, and a curve of the Moon's altitude for the next 24 hours. Compact shows the time and the Moon in large type and leaves the rest out.

In the curve, a solid line means the Moon stands above the horizon; dots mean it is below. The shaded areas behind it come from the altitude of the Sun and mark the twilight phases. The hatched area marks the part of the night when the Sun is more than 18 degrees below the horizon and the Moon has already set, which is when faint objects are visible. Below the curve runs a strip with the major and minor solunar windows. At a glance, that tells you how dark the night gets and when, which is what you need for stargazing, astrophotography, a night hike, or the solunar windows if you fish.

The Moon is drawn, not taken from a set of prerendered images. The illuminated edge points where it points in your sky, computed from the position angle of the bright limb minus the parallactic angle, so before moonset the crescent lies at the angle you will see outside. Surface texture is adjustable from 0 to 100 percent. The dark side can be black, an outline, a grid pattern, or earthshine on AMOLED.

The info field can show illumination, age, the next full moon, the phase name, rise and set, the dark window, estimated brightness in lux, the solunar state, the traditional full moon name, or the apparent size relative to the mean distance. Up to three data fields are available for battery percent, heart rate, steps, temperature, remaining battery days, altitude, air pressure with a trend arrow over three hours, or precipitation probability. Bluetooth and notification icons can be switched on separately.

THE SCIENCE

The ecliptic longitude of the Moon comes from a shortened Meeus series with 13 periodic terms, plus 7 terms for latitude and 5 for distance. From there, the face computes right ascension and declination via the obliquity of the ecliptic, the Greenwich mean sidereal time from its own polynomial, and a topocentric correction for your position on the rotating Earth, because the geocentric position can be off by close to a degree.

The face brackets each horizon crossing in a scanned interval and then halves that interval nine times, which lands on the second. For grazing passes, it evaluates the position directly instead of interpolating, because interpolation across a shallow bracket can move a marginal moonrise by more than a minute. That minute has no practical consequence. It was fixed anyway.

Two horizon definitions run side by side: the geometric center for the curve, and a second signal that includes the apparent radius of the Moon plus 34 arcminutes of refraction for the rise and set you can actually observe.

New moon and full moon are found by iterating on the elongation at the mean rate of 12.1907 degrees per day, with a check that prevents a rounding error from returning the neighboring lunation. The Harvest Moon needs the September equinox, so the face solves by Newton iteration for the moment when the Sun reaches 180 degrees of ecliptic longitude, takes the closest full moon, and calls the one after it the Hunter Moon. The watch computes an equinox in order to display a name.

The brightness estimate combines the usual relation between phase angle and lunar magnitude, the air mass formula of Kasten and Young, extinction of about 0.1 magnitudes per air mass, and a piecewise logarithmic model for twilight.

WAS ES ZEIGT

https://bit60.de/moon-metrics-pro/manual.html
