U 156 was a German submarine of type IX C in the Second World War.
After the sinking of the Laconia on September 12, 1942, the commander of U 156 decided to call in submarines and ships on open frequency to rescue the shipwrecked. 

The rescuers then filled their boats with countless shipwrecked people and took the risk of serving as a target (which is what happened in some cases).

His courage, responsibility and insight to act in this way at great risk is remarkable in the turmoil of war.
