PB-Runner puts the session from your PB-Runner training plan on your wrist and takes you through it.

Open it and it tells you what you are running today. Press start and it counts you through the session step by step — the warm-up, each rep, each recovery, the cool-down — with your target pace or target heart rate on screen, a buzz and a tone at every change, a three-two-one before a timed step runs out, and a nudge if you drift off the pace you were given. Between reps you can flick to your totals for the run, or to where you are in the session as a whole.

When you finish, the run goes back to PB-Runner over your phone: the route, a time for every kilometre, and what you actually did in each rep — how long it lasted, how far it covered, and your average and maximum heart rate through it — so the session is recorded against what was prescribed rather than as one undifferentiated run. The run also saves on the watch as an ordinary running activity, so it reaches your usual Garmin Connect feed like anything else you record.

This app is sometimes listed as PB-Runner Workout Player. It is the same app.

What you need before you install this. A PB-Runner account, which is free. The PB-Runner app on your iPhone or Android phone, updated to the latest version — that is where your training plan lives, and the screen for connecting a watch is in its Settings. And the Garmin Connect app on your phone, which is what carries the session down to the watch and the run back. This app does not work on its own, and it has nothing to show until a session has been scheduled in PB-Runner.

To connect a watch, open Settings in the PB-Runner phone app and tap Garmin. It gives you a six-character code and four steps: install this app, get the code, type it into this app's settings in the Connect IQ app, then open it on your watch. You do that once per watch, and you can disconnect a watch from the same screen at any time.

Distances and paces are shown in metric.

Not every supported model has been tested on a wrist. Each one is verified in the Connect IQ simulator and measured against its own memory limits before we list it. We can't guarantee identical behaviour on legacy models — if something isn't right on yours, tell us and we'll put it right.
